Department of Modern Languages

The Department

Happy Birthday Modern Languages!
The Department of Modern Languages is 100 years old this year. See how it all started...

Welcome to the Department of Modern Languages at Kansas State University, a vibrant place to study world languages, literatures, and cultures. In our large and diverse department you can become proficient in any of the ten languages and cultures in which we offer instruction. You will also be able to explore your interests in a curriculum that includes languages for professions, linguistics, film, literature, and cultural history. Through extracurricular activities and study abroad programs, we offer our community of students many opportunities for learning and experiences beyond the classroom. Please explore the pages on our website.

dhOur 45 faculty and graduate teaching assistants hail from 20 different countries, and foster international understanding and good will on campus. Since 1976, the Department has been home to the eminent international scholarly journal, Studies in Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Literature. The Department has taken a leadership role on such critical international initiatives as the rebuilding of the English Departments at Kabul and Balkh University in Afghanistan.

Dr. Derek Hillard, Department Head & German Professor
