Dr. Walter F. Kolonosky

After suffering a serious illness, Dr. Walter Kolonosky, Professor of Russian, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2009, in Superior, Colorado.

Director of the Russian Language Program for 36 years, Walt taught Russian language and literature to a generation of students who acclaimed his teaching skills.  As the only faculty member in Russian during these years, he handled all of the myriad responsibilities associated with the role of a program director.

Walt’s commitment to Russian language and culture equals his devotion to the cause of internationalism at this university.  The 2007 winner of International Educator of the Year award, Walt was there at the beginning, establishing in the 1980s the mission to internationalize K-State  by founding the Office of Study Abroad.  Eventually, this office evolved into an Office of International Programs, led by an Assistant Provost.  By the end of his ten-year tenure as Director of Study Abroad, more than 100 K-State students and an equal number of students from abroad changed places to study for a semester or an academic year.  As K-State’s Fulbright scholarship program adviser, he shepherded many students through the application process.  On his watch, K-State may boast of thirty-five prestigious Fulbright Scholarship award winners.

Dr. Kolonosky's special linguistic skills extended K-State's international reach, facilitating communication with numerous visiting officials, professors and students from the former Soviet Union and the Russian Republic.  He was the go-to person to meet, play host or act as campus tour guide for Russians of every sort, ranging rom eminent scientists to student athletes.

Walt was an avid tennis player, builder and hiker.  He loved to sing and listen to music, and was a member of adult choirs at Penn State and KSU.  He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Manhattan, son Jon of Arvada, CO, his daughter Julie and grandson Nicholas of Superior, CO, and his sister Marsha of Fremont, OH.  A memorial service was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan on September 12, 2009.

Donations may be made to the KSU Foundation, the Walter Kolonosky Scholarship Fund.
