Prof. Betz is a native speaker of German, who was born in Romania and grew up in Northern Bavaria. She completed her Ph.D. in German Linguistics with an additional Certificate of Advanced Study in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prof. Betz joins the Department of Modern Languages to teach German language and German Studies courses as well as Linguistics/Applied Linguistics. She also coordinates the basic language program.

Prof. Betz’s research interests include conversation analysis, specifically grammar and interaction, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics (in particular dialectology). Her dissertation “Grammar and Interaction: Pivots in German Conversation” investigates the syntax (specifically word order rules) of spoken German. She is currently also researching the function of various modal and response particles in German, including ach, achja, and achso. Prof. Betz is also interested in second language acquisition theory and pedagogy (e.g., languages for specific purposes).

In her spare time, Prof. Betz enjoys gardening, running, and playing Frisbee golf.
