K-STATE OPEN HOUSE HELPS SATISFY CURIOSITY ABOUT ALL THINGS GREEN

by Andy Badeker

The lawn of the quad at Kansas State University grew a little bit greener this spring when it became the site for environmentally conscious displays and events at the All-University Open House Saturday, April 19.

K-State's "carnival of conservation and culture" on the quad north of Hale Library offered green-themed happenings such as a "sort the recyclables" game, a challenge to choose the most environmentally sound products, and information on fairly traded goods.

Student groups also built a 10- by 30-foot "hoop house," to demonstrate extended-season gardening, and a model of a sustainable home, complete with wind-generated electricity and solar cells.

And Manhattan's UFM Community Learning Center offered information on its greenhouse and its many classes focused on sustainable living. A Toyota Prius hybrid car also was on hand.
