K-State's "A Century of Excellence": Taking a walk down memory lane in the College of Veterinary Medicine

By Kira Everhart

The year 2005 will mark the 100th anniversary of the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. According to the college, it has graduated more than 5,000 men and women into the field of veterinary medicine since its establishment in 1905.

As a way to recognize and celebrate the college's upcoming centennial, Ronnie Elmore, associate dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, and Howard Erickson, professor of physiology in the college, have compiled, "A Century of Excellence," a comprehensive collection of photos, facts and history of the college and those involved with it.Elmore and Erickson

The historical publication follows the college's developments, accomplishments and events throughout the years. The goal of the book is to capture the college's heritage and culture for generations past and for generations to come, said Elmore and Erickson.

"Hopefully, when people read the book, they'll get a feel for how the veterinary school developed," Elmore said. "We hope that the book will be the basis for continued documentation of our college's rich heritage."

"I hope the readers will have a better understanding of their heritage at K-State, who some of the pioneers were, and the contributions that these individuals made to veterinary medicine, to the livestock industry and to our country," Erickson said.

Elmore said he hopes the book will help the readers understand their connection with the college.

"We're all part of this continuum," he said. "We're on that same common road, the same thread. I hope that people can feel that."

A two-page spread will be devoted to each graduating class through the class of 2008. Interspersed among the class pages are special sections about a variety of historical issues including a history of the college's facilities, the Tuskegee connection, the college's Nigerian experience and faculty and staff. The book will also contain indexes of all graduates and faculty.

A limited edition of the book will be available preceding publication. It will be personalized and leather bound and all those who purchase the edition will be listed in a special sponsor's section in the book. The cost is $500. Each purchase is a tax-deductible gift and all profits collected by the college from book sales will go toward student scholarships.

Hard cover, non-personalized copies will be available following publication. For more information, contact Elmore at 785-532-5660 or elmore@vet.k-state.edu
