K-STATE'S CHAPTER OF MORTAR BOARD AMONG NATION'S BEST

MANHATTAN -- For the fifth time in the last six years, Kansas State University's chapter of Mortar Board has received the Golden Torch Award. The honor, for the 2007-2008 school year, recognizes the chapter for excellence and as one of the best chapters in the nation.

Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership, and service.

The K-State chapter was one of 27 chapters to receive the Golden Torch Award at the 2008 Mortar Board National Conference in July. Golden Torch Award recipients are selected by a committee based on their devotion to Mortar Board's three key ideals of scholarship, leadership and service throughout the year.

K-State's Mortar Board chapter also received a Project Excellence Award for its Mortar Board Week events. Project Excellence Award recipients are chosen by a selection committee to honor chapters with notable projects in the areas of scholarship, leadership, fundraising, service, the national Reading is Leading literacy initiative, alumni involvement or Mortar Board Week. Only 23 Mortar Board groups were presented the award this year.

The K-State chapter also was honored with the national organization's Most Improved Web Site Award, granted based on content, functionality and appeal, as well as greatest overall improvement from the previous year. The K-State Mortar Board chapter's Web site is at http://www.k-state.edu/mortarboard

Accepting the awards for the K-State chapter at the national conference were Robert Gomez, senior in elementary education, Shawnee, and chapter president, and Madison Loeb, senior in philosophy and political science, Leawood, and chapter vice president.

Mortar Board has grown from its four founding chapters in 1918 to 226 chartered collegiate chapters today with nearly 250,000 initiated members across the nation. K-State's chapter was chartered in 1928 and has 28 members for the 2008-2009 school year. The chapter is a 2004 recipient of Mortar Board's highest honor for collegiate chapters: the Ruth Weimer Mount Chapter Excellence Award. Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community. Some notable Mortar Board members include former President Jimmy Carter, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Lance Armstrong and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
