K-STATE GEOGRAPHY STUDENTS EARN HONORS FOR PAPERS, POSTERS
MANHATTAN -- Several Kansas State University students in geography have received awards for papers or posters they presented at the 2008 meeting of the Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Division of the Association of American Geographers. The meeting was Sept. 12-13 in Grand Forks, N.D.
Award recipients and their presentations included:
Erik Bowles, doctoral student, Manhattan, first-place tie, best student poster, "Preliminary Results for Classifying Heat Waves in the U.S."
Nicole Wayant, senior in mathematics and geography, Topeka, second place, best paper by an undergraduate student, "Malaria Occurrences in Paraguay: Correlating Malaria and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index." Wayant co-presented the paper with K-State's Doug Goodin, professor of geography, and Diego Maldonado, assistant professor of mathematics.
Julie Commerford, New Ulm, Minn., first-place tie, best paper by a master's student, "Brown County, Minnesota: The Land and its People."
Ryan Bergstrom, Bozeman, Mont., first place, best paper by a doctoral student, "The Geographic and Economic Importance of Hunting in Southwestern Montana, USA."
Tyra Olstad, Tonawanda, N.Y., second place, best paper by a doctoral student, "Cultivating Space, Place and Beauty on the Great Plains."
Linnea Sando, Lake Norden, S.D., first-place tie, best paper by a master's student, "Finnish Saunas in Hamlin County, South Dakota."
