K-STATE SPONSOR OF NEW DOCUMENTARY FILM 'WE THE PEOPLE'

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University is among the sponsors of the new documentary film "We The People," which chronicles the dramatic events of the nation's founding and explores how our democracy has thrived for more than 200 years.

The film's sponsors and the media will get a sneak peek of the film at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. American Music and Grammy award-winner Kenny Rogers, who serves as the principal narrator of the film, and a number of the actors who portray the founding fathers will be present at the film preview.

"We the People" brings to life the story of America's founding, which is rooted in three documents -- the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights -- that have shaped the ideals of our country throughout its history.

The giant screen film is a collaboration of the Bill of Rights Institute, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Archives and Inland Sea Productions Inc. The film's producers and directors are award-winning filmmakers Aimee Guignon Larrabee and John Altman. They have co-produced national television documentaries as well as two signature IMAX films.

"The film is intended to galvanize an audience's understanding of our founding documents and their appreciation of our precious constitutional freedoms, as well as present the information in an entertaining and memorable manner,” said Larrabee.

The buildings, monuments, and memorials of Washington, D.C., archival paintings and photographs from America's great museums, and reenactments of key events in Philadelphia, Boston, Mount Vernon and other historic locations come alive in the film as actors deliver the immortal words of Washington, Madison, Jefferson and other founders of our nation.

"The Bill of Rights Institute is proud of our involvement with 'We the People,'"said Victoria Hughes, institute president. "The film will enlighten audiences of all ages about the importance of the American founding and the challenges America has faced in living up to our founding principles."

The Bill of Rights Institute is creating in-depth curriculum materials for American classrooms. The outreach for the film also will include a variety of family activities.

Along with K-State, the film's sponsors include Ford Motor Company Fund, H&R Block, Midwest Airlines, Kansas City Southern, The Kauffman Foundation, The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, Charles E. Koch Charitable Foundation, The Enid and Crosby Kemper Foundation and J.E. Dunn Construction Company.

"Education is a top priority for Ford Motor Company Fund," said Jim Vella, president, Ford Motor Company Fund. "Projects such as 'We The People' help bring history to life and educate in an entertaining way, which makes the learning experience both fun and informative."

An academic advisory panel, comprised of some of the nation's leading Constitutional scholars, has been working with the film's producers to ensure accuracy of the film's content. A national steering committee includes the librarians of Congress, the director of the President's Committee for the Arts and Humanities, three directors of the Smithsonian Institution and bipartisan leaders of Congress.
