K-STATE BRINGS BLUEGRASS FAMILY BAND CHERRYHOLMES TO MCCAIN AUDITORIUM
MANHATTAN -- Cherryholmes, a high-energy, bluegrass family band, will perform at Kansas State University's McCain Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, as part of the 2008-09 McCain Performance Series.
The band offers vocal harmonies, breakneck fiddling, classic country yodeling and Irish step dancing.
Cherryholmes was named the 2005 International Bluegrass Music Association's Entertainer of the Year. The band's album, Cherryholmes II: Black and White," debuted as No. 1 on Billboard's top bluegrass chart in June 2007. The group's first commercial release was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2006.
The band's newest album, "Cherryholmes III: Don't Believe," on the Skaggs Family label, has just been released. The group also performs regularly at the historic Grand Ole Opry.
Cherryholmes consists of six band members. Jere or "Pop" is the father and leader of the band. He plays the upright bass and is credited with shaping the band's style. Sandy Lee, his wife, plays the mandolin and is best known for her yodeling abilities. They have four children who are also band members. Cia Leigh plays banjo and was recently called by USA Today as "bluegrass's most stunning new female vocalist." B.J. is a master on the fiddle and occasionally adds lead vocals. Skip is the band's Hank Williams look-alike guitar player. Molly Kate also plays fiddle and provides vocals.
The Cherryholmes performance is recommended for all ages, and tickets are on sale now. Prices start at $12 for K-State students and $24 for the general public. Discounts also are available for seniors, children, military and K-State faculty and staff. To order tickets call the McCain box office at 785-532-6428 or visit:
