BROWNFIELD REDEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP SEPT. 9-11 AT K-STATE
MANHATTAN -- Redeveloping contaminated properties for beneficial use by the community is the topic of a special workshop at Kansas State University. From Brown to Green: Sustainable Redevelopment of Contaminated Properties Workshop will be Sept. 9-11 at the K-State Student Union.
The workshop, which is coming to Manhattan after being conducted in Chicago, the Quad Cities and Springfield, Mo., includes expert speakers on sustainable design and redevelopment. The workshop will include a bus tour of potential brownfield redevelopment sites in Manhattan and Junction City, as well as interactive design sessions where workshop participants will learn to apply the principles of sustainable design and redevelopment to the sites visited on the tour.
The workshop is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Region 7, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, K-State, the cities of Manhattan and Junction City, the Northeast Midwest Institute and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is geared toward local government officials, not-for-profit organizations, consultants, developers, attorneys and community members who are interested in understanding, promoting and utilizing sustainable redevelopment techniques.

Preceding the workshop will be a free public lecture by James Patchett, founder and president of the Conservation Design Forum near Chicago. The lecture, "Design for Sustainable Urban Systems: Community Planning/Design as a Vehicle for Integrating Socioeconomic and Ecological Concerns," will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, in Room 212 of the Union.
