K-STATE'S COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN DISPLAYS WORK BY STUDY-ABROAD STUDENTS

MANHATTAN -- Projects by students in Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and Design who studied overseas will be on display through Oct. 10 in the Chang Gallery and the first floor hallway of the east wing of Seaton Hall.

The exhibition is free and the public is welcome. The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

In spring and summer 2008, 74 students in the college chose to study abroad. Of the participants, 60 are fifth-year students, 11 are now third- or fourth-year students in the interior architecture and product design program, and three are fourth-year students in the regional and community planning program. This marks the first time that students in regional and community planning have been able to participate in study abroad.

According to Lynn Ewanow, associate dean and director of international programs for the college, such programs particularly benefit students of architecture, interior architecture and product design, landscape architecture, and regional and community planning. Studying in unfamiliar environments heightens cultural and historical awareness; improves self-reliance; encourages better understanding of global economics, politics, and societies; and broadens professional horizons.

"The College of Architecture, Planning, and Design is committed to enhancing the study abroad experience for its students and supporting the emphasis on international education that is part of the K-State strategic plan," Ewanow said.

Faculty on the college's international studies committee include Katrina Lewis, assistant professor of interior architecture and product design; Ray Streeter, associate professor of architecture; Stephanie Rolley, professor of landscape architecture and regional and community planning; and Ewanow. Lewis and Streeter also taught in the program at Orvieto, Italy, while Anthony Chelz, associate professor of landscape architecture/regional and community planning, taught in the program at Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy.
