K-STATE'S BEACH MUSEUM OF ART SEEKS 'PICTURE PEOPLE' FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS

MANHATTAN -- Would you like to bring more art into your child's classroom? Kansas State University's Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art and the Junior League of the Flint Hills are offering a Picture Person Workshop from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at the museum.

The art appreciation program trains volunteers to discuss works of art and artists with students at local schools. Art lovers and members of the Junior League of the Flint Hills started Manhattan's picture person programs many years ago. Several schools still have a such a program through their Parent Teacher Organizations, but it is the goal of the Junior League and the Beach Museum of Art to revitalize the program and make it more prominent.

"We want to be sure that the arts remain a vital part of our children's education," said Kathrine Schlageck, senior educator at the Beach Museum. "By reinvigorating the picture person program, we hope to keep art a priority in our schools."

The workshop also is for parents who want to add art to their home-school program.

The free workshop will provide volunteers with the knowledge they need to stimulate and educate children about art. Topics include art vocabulary, reading a painting, where to find resources, and projects and ideas for integrating art with math, science, social studies and language arts.

Participants will receive a guide to talking about art with children and a listing of what's available at the Beach Museum's Teachers Resource Center. They'll also receive an ARTSmart poster set and curriculum.

More information about the workshop is available by contacting Schlageck at klwalk@k-state.edu or 785-532-7718.

The Beach Museum of Art is on the southeast corner of the K-State campus at 14th Street and Anderson Avenue.
