CHIMES HONORARY SELECTS K-STATE'S FAMILY OF THE YEAR

MANHATTAN — For their years of pulling together, and pulling for Kansas State University, the Manhattan family of Meryl and Nancy Wilson has been named "family of the year" by K-State's Chimes junior honorary.

"When selecting the family of the year, Chimes looks at three main points," said Jessica A. Miller, programming chair for Family Day, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 22. "How the family is affiliated with the university, the way they show their loyalty and pride in K-State, and what role their family plays in their lives."

Miller, a Lenexa junior in elementary education, cited the Wilsons' long support of K-State athletics. They attend all home football, basketball and baseball games.

"Meryl has been a season ticket holder for basketball and football since 1967," Miller said. "It is clear this family has supported K-State through thick and thin." Meryl Wilson, a Manhattan native and a 21st District Court judge, even played on the baseball team when he attended K-State.

More to the point of family, the Wilsons have four daughters who have graduated from K-State and one daughter, Jamie, who is currently enrolled as a sophomore in history. "And when Nancy Wilson was diagnosed with cancer eight years ago, they came together to support each other in a rough time," Miller said.

"Our selection committee reviewed multiple applications and we felt the Wilson family is deserving of this award."

The Wilsons will be recognized with a plaque Friday, Sept. 22, at a dinner show by Comedy City, a Kansas City troupe, at the K-State Student Union. The event is part of K-State's Family Day activities.
