ITALIAN ARCHITECT TO SPEAK ON CALABRIAN CULTURE IN K-STATE PRESENTATION
MANHATTAN -- Italian architect and educator Rosario Chimirri will present "Cultural Landscapes in Calabria" at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, in the Little Theater at the Kansas State University Student Union.
The lecture, sponsored by the K-State College of Architecture, Planning and Design and supported by the student fine arts fee, is free and open to the public.
Chimirri is a professor of architecture in the department of territorial planning at the University of Calabria in Arcavacata di Rende, Italy. He has advanced degrees in architecture, museography and the humanities. His research ranges widely, including the material culture of southern Italy, industrial archaeology, vernacular architecture, local festivals, city and regional planning, landscape preservation, consolidation and adaptation of historical constructions, and anti-seismic systems in masonry buildings.
He is a specialist member of the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's Net Forum and has given multiple talks in Europe and South America. His publications include books on southern Italy, popular architecture, historical patterns of settlement, earthen houses and folkloric museums.
He has also made a documentary film on earthen houses and has supervised several community planning and historical reconstruction projects.
