K-STATE'S BEACH MUSEUM TO SCREEN PBS 'PROTEST' EPISODE

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University's Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art will offer a free screening of an episode from the PBS series "Art:21 -- Art in the 21st Century" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4.

The museum will preview the "Protest" episode from season four of the Emmy-nominated series. Complimentary coffee and a dessert bar will be available.

"Art:21" captures artists across the country and internationally in their own studios. The series gives viewers behind-the-scenes looks at the creation of some of today's most interesting art.

In the "Protest" episode, viewers will see how four artists use their work to portray war, express outrage and convey empathy for those who are suffering. The artists in this screening will be Nancy Spero, a feminist wall artist; An-My Le, a war photographer; Alfredo Jaar, a Chilean-born installation artist; and Jenny Holzer, known for projecting her one-line slogans in public places.

Kathrine Schlageck, senior educator at the Beach Museum, expects the preview to pique the interest of art aficionados.

"'Art:21' provides viewers a chance to see inside the artists' heads," Schlageck said. "It also shows how they respond to the world we live in."

The four-episode series is scheduled to air on KTWU Channel 11 at 9 p.m. Oct. 28 and Nov. 11, 18 and 25.

For more information, call the Beach Museum of Art at 785-532-7718. Admission to the museum is free, and free visitor parking is available next to the facility.
