Dave Lewis' Pink and Purple Polyester Party Oct. 18 to support university cancer research

Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013

MANHATTAN -- Dave Lewis, public address announcer for Kansas State University football and men's basketball games and a Riley County commissioner, is throwing another party to benefit the university's Johnson Cancer Research Center.

Lewis will host the third Pink and Purple Polyester Party to celebrate the life of his late wife, Elena, who died of breast cancer in 2006, and to raise funds for a scholarship endowment for cancer research in her name. It will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at the Houston Street Ballroom, 427 Houston St., Manhattan.

The party will feature a popular disco band from Kansas City called Disco Dick & the Mirror Balls, a photo booth, elegant appetizers and desserts, and a cash bar. Also part of the festivities will be the "Off the Hook" bra art contest, which will feature submissions from local businesses competing for votes in the form of donations.

About the party's name and theme, Lewis said pink represents breast cancer, purple represents Kansas State University, and polyester represents the disco era. Partygoers are encouraged to dress for the theme, but costumes are not required.

"This is very personal for our family because of Elena's fight against cancer and because two of her sisters are breast cancer survivors," Lewis said. "Also, we all have daughters, and I want to support the center's mission to conquer cancer in our lifetime for their sakes."

The public is invited. Tickets are $40 each, $30 of which is tax deductible. Reserved tables with seating for 10 are $500. More information, photos of past parties and a ticket purchasing form are available at http://cancer.k-state.edu/newsevents/polyester.html. Tickets also may be purchased by calling the center at 785-532-6705.

The party is sponsored in part by CivicPlus, Briggs Auto Group and Kansas State Federal Credit Union. More sponsors are welcome.

The Johnson Cancer Research Center supports K-State cancer research, education and public outreach. Its programs are made possible through private donations.
