A cornucopia of culture: November offers music, art and more at K-State

MANHATTAN -- Turkey and stuffing aren't the only highlights of November. Kansas State University is offering a variety of cultural events to enjoy throughout the month.

The following events, free unless otherwise indicated, are sponsored by the McCain Performance Series, department of music and Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. They include:

* "Lines Traveling Through Space: Ghosts and Shadows, Minimal Sculpture by Tal Streeter" runs through Nov. 13 at the Beach Museum and features the work of Manhattan native Streeter.

* "Teresa Schmidt: 2011 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print Artist" runs through Dec. 11 at the Beach Museum. The exhibition displays a selection of works by Schmidt, professor of art at the university.

* "Art and Psychology: The Work of Roy Langford (1903-1990)" runs through Dec. 19 at the Beach Museum and features the works of Langford, a former longtime university psychology professor.

* Guest artist Laura Nocchiero will perform a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, in All Faiths Chapel. Nocchiero graduated from the Antonio Vivaldi State Music Conservatory in Novara, Italy, and has performed extensively both as a soloist and as a guest artist with numerous international ensembles and orchestras.

* The K-State Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble recital, under the direction of Steven Maxwell, assistant professor of music, will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, in All Faiths Chapel.

* "Folk Art in Kansas," a presentation by Erika Nelson, will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Beach Museum. An independent artist, educator and director of the World's Largest Things Inc., Nelson will discuss folk art and outsider art as a part of Kansas history and heritage.

* The bassoon studio of Susan Maxwell, instructor of music, will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in All Faiths Chapel.

* Come listen as David Pickering, assistant professor of music and faculty organist, performs a solo recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, in All Faiths Chapel.

* The K-State Brass Ensemble concert, directed by graduate assistant Andy Feyes, doctoral student in curriculum and instruction, Manhattan, will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, in All Faiths Chapel. The Brass Ensemble will perform works by Strauss, Bruckner, Bach, Tull and Gabrieli.

* Come participate in the "Introduction to American Art History Part III," at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, at the Beach Museum. A part of the Art History Lecture Series, the presentation will be lead by Kathrine Schlageck, Beach Museum senior educator.

* The flute studio of Karen Large, assistant professor of music, will present a recital at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, in All Faiths Chapel.

* A General Student Recital will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, in All Faiths Chapel. The recital will feature K-State students from the voice, woodwind, string, brass, percussion and keyboard divisions.

* The saxophone studio of Anna Marie Wytko, assistant professor of music, will perform solo and ensemble repertoire at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in All Faiths Chapel.

* The "2011 K-State Department of Art Faculty Biennial" exhibition opens Friday, Nov. 11, at the Beach Museum of Art. The exhibition will feature the creative work of the talented K-State art faculty. It runs through March 16, 2012.

* The university's David Littrell, distinguished professor of music, and Amanda Arrington, music staff accompanist, will present a cello and piano/harpsichord performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the Hemisphere Room at Hale Library. Part of the Hale Library Concert Series, the program includes sonatas by Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, Beethoven, a concerto movement by Lalo and short pieces by Haydn, Part and Cassado. Tickets are $25 and may be reserved by emailing libfrnds@k-state.edu.

* The annual university Marching Band Concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, in Ahearn Field House. The marching band will perform this season's halftime shows as well as favorite stadium tunes and traditions. Frank Tracz, professor of music, and Don Linn, instructor of music, direct the marching band. A small donation is requested at the door.

* "To Build a Rich Collection," an Art History Lecture Series presentation, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at the Beach Museum. The lecture will be presented by Bill North and Liz Seaton, art curators at the museum.

* The percussion studio of Kurt Gartner, professor of music, will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in All Faiths Chapel.

* "Meet the Art: Roy Langford" will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Beach Museum. Come and take a closer look at the works of Langford, former university psychology professor. The event will be led by Irene Ward, Beach Museum docent and co-curator of the exhibition "Art and Psychology: The Art of Roy Langford (1903-1990)."

* The "Sticks and Strings" concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in All Faiths Chapel. This concert features student percussion and string ensembles.

* Ladies Night will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Beach Museum. Have dessert and make special holiday greeting cards with collage materials. Entry is $10 a person. Reservations required by calling 785-532-7718 or by email to klwalk@k-state.edu.

* The Early Music Festival gets under way at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in All Faiths Chapel Auditorium. This event features performances and a poster session by the music history students of Nora Lewis, assistant professor of music, and the Collegium Musicum, directed by Thomas Bell, graduate services librarian at Hale Library. Repertoire from ancient, medieval, renaissance and early baroque periods will be presented.

* K-State Jazz Bands, directed by Fred Burrack, associate professor of music and director of assessment, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union.

* The organ studio of David Pickering, assistant professor of music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, in All Faiths Chapel.

* Cirque Mechanics "Boom Town" will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at McCain Auditorium. Featuring acrobatics and adventure, early mining machines serve as the backdrop for prospectors and adventure seekers in Cirque Mechanics' newest production. Tickets cost $15.50 to $45, with a variety of discounts available for university students, faculty and staff; military members; and youth 18 and under. * The K-State Percussion Ensemble, directed by Kurt Gartner, professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in McCain Auditorium.

* Guest violinists Jenny Lee Vaughn and Bernie Vaughn will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in All Faiths Chapel. The program includes works by Beethoven, Saint-Saens and Stravinsky, and will feature a chamber work of Mozart assisted by Alfred Cochran, professor of music; Frank Sidorfsky, professor emeritus of music; and David Littrell, distinguished professor of music.
