K-STATE GEOGRAPHY STUDENT RECEIVES 2008 GAMMA THETA UPSILON BUZZARD SCHOLARSHIP

MANHATTAN -- Sumanth Reddy, a K-State doctoral student in geography, Manhattan, has been awarded a Gamma Theta Upsilon Buzzard Scholarship for 2008.

"Sumo is the 18th K-State geography student to be awarded this scholarship, the most of any university in the country,” said Richard Marston, university distinguished professor of geography and head of the department. The scholarship provides a $1,000 award.

Reddy has been an active member of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the international geographic honor society, since fall 2005. He received the scholarship based on his cumulative and geography grade point averages, letters of recommendation, his contributions to the K-State chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon and the department of geography, and his own appraisal of how the scholarship will help him personally and professionally.

With the scholarship, Reddy said he will continue to pursue his passion for geography.

"As far as I can remember I have always loved geography and travel," Reddy said. "The Gamma Theta Upsilon Buzzard Scholarship will help me travel to conferences where I can present my research."

Reddy will focus his research on his areas of interest.

"Although geography is extremely diverse and interdisciplinary within the field, my interests lie in the subfields of political, medical and regional geography. Africa and South Asia are my regional interests," he said. "I am interested in how geography impacts people in different parts of the world."
