DAVID MAYES JOINS K-STATE AS UNIVERSITY PHOTOGRAPHER
MANHATTAN -- Award-winning photographer David Mayes has joined Kansas State University as university photographer. He replaces Dan Donnert, who has accepted a position in K-State's College of Agriculture.
"Dave Mayes was selected from a national pool of applicants for the university photographer position," said Cheryl May, assistant vice president for university relations. "His photographs are not only creative, but technically excellent as well. K-State is fortunate to have Dave as the university photographer.
"In the next few months we will be introducing a number of new innovations to enable all K-State units to access great photos at affordable prices."
Mayes is responsible for providing professional photography for a variety of university needs and clients. He also will maintain the university's photo archive and assist with K-State video projects for podcasts and placement on such Web sites as YouTube.
Prior to joining K-State, Mayes was a staff photographer at the Manhattan Mercury since 1995. In addition to providing high quality news, sports and feature photos for the newspaper, he also designed pages and graphics and wrote some columns and stories.
His work for the Mercury received numerous honors, including third place from the National Newspaper Association in 2008 for photo essay and third place in 2007 for breaking news photo. Mayes also has been consistently recognized by the Kansas Press Association, including third place in both feature photo and photo package in 2008; second place in photo illustration and honorable mention in feature package in 2007; first place in photo illustration and second place in news photo in 2006; honorable mention for photo package in 2005; and second place for photo illustration and honorable mention for feature photo in 2003. His other honors include second place for a news photo in the 1993 Associated Collegiate Press Picture of the Year competition.
Mayes earned a bachelor's degree in history from K-State in 1996. His professional experience includes serving as a staff photographer for the Hutchinson News from October 1994 to July 1995, and as photo editor of the Tahoe World in May-September 1994.
He is a native of Abilene and is the son of Carol Mayes and the late John Mayes.
