K-STATE DEBATE TEAM RANKED SECOND IN NATION AS SEASON GETS UNDER WAY

MANHATTAN -- The Kansas State University debate team earned a No. 2 overall ranking from the Cross Examination Debate Association after a strong performance at the recent Kansas City Kansas Community College Tournament.

Five different K-State varsity pairs have advanced to the elimination rounds in the first two tournaments the team participated in this season, the first time for such a feat in more than 10 years, according to Justin Green, K-State debate coach. In addition, one varsity pair also won a first-place varsity trophy.

The debate season begins in the middle of September and runs through the end of March. In tournaments, two-member teams work to advance through several rounds of competition. Individual placings also are given out, based on each speaker's performance.

Students who participated at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Tournament and their results, included:

Heather Woods, junior in political science, Douglass, 10th-place individual performer in the varsity division.

From Manhattan: Ashley Denney, sophomore in English, advanced to elimination rounds in only second varsity decision; John Grice, freshman in political science, advanced to octofinals in varsity division; Jordan Hanson, junior in English, advanced to octofinals in varsity division; and Derek Ziegler, freshman in philosophy and political science, first-place varsity team trophy and eighth overall individual performer in the varsity division.

Beth Mendenhall, junior in philosophy, Olathe, first-place varsity team trophy and second overall individual performer in the varsity division; Kevin Walbridge, freshman in speech, Overland Park, second-place team, junior varsity division; Caitlin Reynolds, sophomore in information systems, Topeka, advanced to elimination rounds in only second varsity decision.

From Wichita: Gloria Funcheon, sophomore in history and international studies, second-place team, junior varsity division and second overall junior varsity performer; and Diante Calhoun, junior in speech, third overall individual performer in the varsity division.
