FORMER K-STATE GRADUATE TO GIVE LECTURE, 'MY JOURNEYS WITH MATHEMATICS,' FOR K-STATE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University alumna April Cordry-Moore will present the lecture "My Journeys with Mathematics" at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, in 122 Cardwell Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Cordry-Moore is a 2003 K-State graduate who received degrees in mathematics and education. She will discuss how mathematics has opened doors and impacted her life.

"Math and math education have always been a key factor in all of my experiences. I want to share with students the opportunities that getting a math degree can provide," Cordry-Moore said.

After graduating, she used her degrees to work for the Peace Corps as a youth development volunteer. "In the Peace Corps I was able to train future teachers in calculus and physics as well as basic math," Cordry-Moore said.

Now a high school teacher at Lancaster High School in Texas, Cordry-Moore describes her teaching style as hands-on. "As a math teacher I try to find interesting connections between life and mathematics to share with my students," she said.

Cordry-Moore also has taking advantage of another opportunity to use her mathematics education. Last summer she participated in a research internship at Southwestern Medical University to analyze antibody-staining procedures on human cancer cells.

However she chooses to use her mathematics and education background, Cordry-Moore said she is sure of one thing: her K-State degrees are making many opportunities possible.

"I believe that having math and education degrees from K-State have created many opportunities for me. People can look at the transcript of courses I took from K-State and see they can be applied in many different careers," she said.
