K-STATE'S PRIDE OF WILDCAT LAND TO HOST MARCHING BANDS FROM ACROSS THE MIDWEST AT CENTRAL STATES MARCHING FESTIVAL OCT. 18
MANHATTAN -- More than 30 high school marching bands from across the Midwest will descend on Kansas State University Oct. 18 to strut their stuff at the Central States Marching Festival.
During the festival, now in its 22nd year, judges consider aspects of the performance including repertoire, showmanship, coordination, musical and marching technique, musicianship, musical content, accuracy and definition of field drill and visual content. Each band is then rated as superior, excellent or good. Each band also receives a video of its performance and hears comments from the judges. One-hour clinics conducted by staff members of the K-State Marching Band are also available.
"The Central States Marching Festival is a chance for high school musicians from across the Midwest to learn the best techniques from a well-qualified panel of judges and one of the best marching bands in the Midwest -- K-State's Pride of Wildcat Land," said Frank Tracz, director of bands at K-State.
Performances start at noon on Wagner Field at Bill Snyder Family Stadium and wrap up around 8:30 p.m. with an exhibition by the K-State Marching Band. Awards will be presented afterward. Admission is $5 for adults; $3 for high school and middle school students and senior citizens; and free for children 12 and younger and K-State students with their K-State ID.
The judges are Larry Blocher, professor of music at Troy University in Alabama; Jeanne Copeland, color guard instructor at K-State; Emory Dease, drumline instructor at K-State; James Oliver, retired band director from Lee's Summit, Mo., public schools; James Saker, director of bands at the University of Nebraska-Omaha; and Gavin Smith, assistant director of bands at Vanderbilt University.
