USDA GRANT TO FUND K-STATE'S RURAL GROCERY STORE INITIATIVE: To help small towns sustain their local food suppliers, the Center for Engagement and Community Development at Kansas State University has begun a Rural Grocery Store Sustainability Initiative, which recently received a $50,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development office.

K-STATE DEPARTMENT OF ART OFFERING GALLERY TALK, ART LECTURE: The art department at Kansas State University is sponsoring upcoming presentations by two artists. Nelson Smith will have a "Gallery Talk" at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in Willard Hall's Chapman Gallery, while Michael Braley, design director at VSA Partners Inc. in New York, will present an art lecture at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in the K-State Student Union's Little Theater.

EDUCATION CAREER FAIR AT K-STATE PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS, EMPLOYERS: Kansas State University's annual Fall Education Career Fair, organized by K-State career and employment services, will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the K-State Student Union Ballroom.

FOUR K-STATE ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS EARN HONORS IN BAYER STONE COMPETITION: Several Kansas State University architecture students received honors in the recent Bayer Stone Competition and for a video project related to the competition.

K-STATE PROFESSOR AND CONTRIBUTOR TO NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING WORK LOOKS AT NEXT WAVE OF RESEARCH IN GREENHOUSE GAS MITIGATION THROUGH AGRICULTURE: Charles W. Rice, K-State professor of agronomy, is doing more than just sitting back and enjoying the Nobel Prize-winning status of his efforts. He and other researchers at K-State and its partner institutions already are hard at work pursuing the next phase of research that will find agricultural solutions to climate change.

BUSINESS HONORARY AT K-STATE SPONSORING FUNDRAISER FOR TRIBLE SCHOLARSHIP FUND, K-STATE CANCER CENTER: The Kansas State University chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi, the national professional business fraternity, will have a poker run fundraiser from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in Aggieville.

GARMIN DONATES NAVIGATIONAL EQUIPMENT TO K-STATE AT SALINA: A recent donation by a navigation and communications device company will help students in the new avionics certificate program at Kansas State University at Salina learn about installing and repairing navigational systems in aircraft.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AT K-STATE HONORS 11 ALUMNI FOR CAREER SUCCESS: The Kansas State University College of Engineering will honor 11 alumni for professional career accomplishment during the first 20 years following their graduation. The honorees will be recognized at ceremonies on the K-State campus Saturday, Nov. 3.

SUE PETERSON RECEIVES KRAUSE OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AWARD FROM K-STATE'S ALPHA TAU OMEGA FRATERNITY: Kansas State University's chapter of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity is recognizing Susan "Sue" Peterson with its Robert S. Krause Alpha Tau Omega Outstanding Campus Leader Award.

K-STATE'S SUBBARATNAM MUTHUKRISHNAN AND BARBARA VALENT NAMED FELLOWS OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE: Two more Kansas State University faculty have been designated fellows by the world's largest general scientific society. Subbaratnam Muthukrishnan, university distinguished professor of biochemistry, and Barbara Valent, university distinguished professor of plant pathology, have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.

K-STATE SOCIOLOGISTS USING DEPT. OF ENERGY GRANT TO PROBE SOCIOLOGICAL, CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT OF ETHANOL PLANTS IN KANSAS AND IOWA: Scientists and economists are no strangers to discussions about alternative fuels, but a recently announced research grant means that some sociologists at Kansas State University are joining the conversation.

K-STATE CROPS TEAM WINS REGIONAL CONTEST AGAIN: For the 13th year in a row, the Kansas State University Crops Team placed first overall in the Central Region Collegiate Crops Contest.

K-STATE OFFERING COMPARATIVE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE SYSTEMS CLASS: K-State's comparative food and agriculture systems course, AGEC 710, introduces students to the agricultural and cultural situations in the Mercosur, European Union, Russia and the former Soviet Union, East Asia, Oceania, South Asia and sub-Sahara Africa.

COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN STUDENTS AT K-STATE PARTICIPATE IN ACADEMIC INTERNSHIPS, DISPLAY WORK: Projects by student participants in the spring and summer 2007 academic internship programs of the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning and Design are now on display through Nov. 9 in the Chang Gallery and the first floor hallway of the east wing of Seaton Hall.

DEFENSE SECRETARY ROBERT GATES TO PRESENT LANDON LECTURE AT K-STATE: Defense Secretary Robert Gates will be a Landon Lecturer at Kansas State University. His speech will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, in K-State's McCain Auditorium.

GRADUATE STUDENTS TAKING ON NEW 'FRONTIERS' AT K-STATE, USING MULTIMEDIA AND A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO RESEARCH: This summer, Ryan Bradburn, a second-year veterinary medicine student at Kansas State University, had the chance to investigate the realities of border security up close and personal.

K-STATE AT SALINA TO OFFER DISTANCE EDUCATION COURSE IN AIRPORT PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT: Kansas State University at Salina will offer a new airport planning and management course through continuing education beginning in spring 2008. The course will be offered online with some field components, including an actual airport inspection.

K-STATE A MODEL FOR COURSE ACCESSIBILITY: Andrea Blair wants all students at Kansas State University to have equal educational opportunities. While this could be said about most K-State faculty, Blair, the director of the university's disability support services, has been making it easier for faculty to comply with K-State's new course accessibility standards policy through some online help.

K-STATE STUDENTS WIN TOP HONORS IN NATIONAL LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE DESIGN COMPETITION: Two recent graduates of Kansas State University's landscape architecture program are the recipients of a top award in the annual American Society of Landscape Architects' National Student Design Competition for work they completed while at K-State.

K-STATE DEBATE TEAM RANKED SECOND IN THE NATION AFTER STRONG START: The Kansas State University debate team recently received a No. 2 national ranking following a strong showing by team members at the varsity, junior varsity and novice levels.

DIRECTOR OF K-STATE'S VETERINARY DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORY TO SERVE AS VICE PRESIDENT OF ASSOCIATION OF VETERINARY LABORATORY DIAGNOSTICIANS: Dr. Gary Anderson, director of the Kansas State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, was recently elected vice president of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians.

K-STATE'S QUEST HONORARY SELECTS 33 NEW MEMBERS: A freshman honorary society unique to Kansas State University has named its new members for the 2007-2008 school year. Quest is organized by K-State's chapter of Blue Key, a senior leadership honor society that promotes student leadership in high school and college. Quest was founded at K-State in 2004 and remains exclusive to the university.

K-STATE TRANSPORTATION CENTER TO HAVE YOUNG DRIVER SAFETY FAIR: The Kansas State University Transportation Center will host a young driver safety fair from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in Fiedler Hall. The fair is part of National Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct. 15-20.

VETERINARIAN DAN RICHARDSON TO LEAD K-STATE OLATHE INNOVATION CAMPUS: A nationally known expert in biosciences and animal health is joining Kansas State University in January as head of the university's Olathe Innovation Campus. Veterinarian Dr. Daniel C. Richardson is currently vice president, Pet Nutrition Center and chief animal welfare veterinarian for Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. In his new post he will be chief executive officer of the K-State Olathe Innovation Campus Inc.

K-STATE MICROBIOLOGY EXPERT DEVELOPS TEST THAT CAN MAKE CLOSING HAWAII'S BEACHES BECAUSE OF BACTERIA LEVELS SPEEDIER, MORE EFFECTIVE: Daniel Y.C. Fung, professor of food science at K-State, has developed a water quality test that can tell Hawaiian authorities in a matter of hours, rather than days, whether a beach should be closed because of contamination.

K-STATE RESEARCHER RECEIVES AWARD FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO RURAL MENTAL HEALTH FIELD: Kansas State University's Charlie L. Griffin has received the Victor I. Howery Memorial Award given each year by the National Association for Rural Mental Health to an individual who has made contributions to the rural mental health field.

K-STATE SCIENTISTS RECEIVE FUNDING TO ENHANCE FOOD PRODUCTION IN AFRICA: An international team of scientists led by Kansas State University researchers has been awarded a four-year grant from Intsormil, the Sorghum/Millet Collaborative Research Program of the U.S. Agency for International Development, to improve sorghum and pearl millet production in West Africa.

K-STATE STUDENTS WIN HONORS AT DIVISIONAL MEETING OF THE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN GEOGRAPHERS: Several geography students from Kansas State University earned honors at the recent meeting of the Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Division of the Association of American Geographers.

K-STATE CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR TO RECEIVE MASAO HORIBA AWARD FOR RESEARCH WITH MICROFLUIDIC DEVICES: Chris Culbertson, associate professor of chemistry, has won a 2007 Masao Horiba Award for "Rapid Analysis of Individual T-Lymphocyte Cells on Microfluidic Devices." He will receive the award Wednesday, Oct. 17, during a special ceremony at Kyoto University in Japan, where he also will present a lecture describing his research.

K-STATE PROFESSOR HELPED AUTHOR NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNING UNITED NATIONS REPORT ON CLIMATE CHANGE: The Nobel Peace Prize won by Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has a Kansas connection. Chuck Rice, Kansas State University professor of agronomy, served with more than 100 other climate change experts from across the world to prepare the full report on mitigation.

STRANGE AND EERIE HAPPENINGS AT K-STATE'S HALE LIBRARY: Little green men from Mars and things that go bump in the night are the focus of a new exhibit at Kansas State University's Hale Library.

K-STATE'S MCCAIN PERFORMANCE SERIES TO FEATURE A NIGHT OF MAGIC AND ILLUSION: Kevin and Cindy Spencer will bring their Theatre of Illusion to the McCain Performance Series at Kansas State University. K-STATE NAMES CAROL SHANKLIN INTERIM DEAN OF GRADUATE SCHOOL: Carol Shanklin, a veteran administrator and educator in food service and dietetics at Kansas State University, has been named interim dean of the Graduate School. Since August she has been the school's acting dean; before that she served as associate dean.

K-STATE'S ADVANCED MANUFACTURING INSTITUTE RECEIVES GRANT FROM ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADMINISTRATION: The Advanced Manufacturing Institute at Kansas State University has been awarded $510,000 over three years from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration to provide business and technical assistance to Kansas entrepreneurs and businesses.

K-STATE TRANSPORTATION CENTER SEEKS COMMUNITY HELP WITH LOGO DESIGN: The Kansas State University Transportation Center is sponsoring a logo design contest. Entries should reflect the purpose of the newly formed center, which coordinates research, education and outreach efforts in transportation engineering.

FLU VACCINE AVAILABLE AT K-STATE'S LAFENE HEALTH CENTER: Kansas State University's Lafene Health Center is sponsoring several flu vaccine clinics in October and November. TEAM OF K-STATE STUDENTS IN WASHINGTON, D.C., FOR 2007 SOLAR DECATHLON: K-State is among the 20 universities and colleges competing in the 2007 Solar Decathlon, where student teams design, build and operate homes that are powered entirely by the sun. The competition is Oct. 12-20 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., but K-State and the other teams have already arrived to begin assembling their homes.

K-STATE COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE OFFICIALS WORKING TO HELP ERADICATE FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE: Administrators from Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine are traveling to South America to learn what K-State can do to help eradicate foot-and-mouth disease in the Western Hemisphere.

AVIATION SAFETY MINOR IS NO ACCIDENT AT K-STATE AT SALINA, WHERE LEARNING SAFETY PRACTICES AND PROCEDURES ARE BEING TAUGHT AS JOB SKILLS: K-State at Salina's aviation safety minor was started as a way to expand the aviation program. It was developed based on a survey the school conducted to see what industry was looking for in a safety program, according to Eric Shappee, associate professor of aviation.

SOCIAL THREATS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON COURT OUTCOMES TOPIC OF AWARD-WINNING PAPER BY K-STATE DOCTORAL STUDENT IN SOCIOLOGY: A Kansas State University graduate student's paper that examines how social threat may influence individual criminal court outcomes has been honored as the best in a competition sponsored by the Midwestern Criminal Justice Association.

K-STATE ALUMNI SURVEY REVEALS GRADUATE SATISFACTION: Each year, Kansas State University's office of assessment conducts a survey of alumni. This year, the survey reveals that 453 out of 457 students who participated said they would still choose to attend K-State if given the chance to do it over again.

AMERICAN HUMANICS SPONSORSHIP ESTABLISHED IN HONOR OF AMY BUTTON RENZ: The Amy Button Renz American Humanics Management Institute Sponsorship has been established in honor of Renz, president and CEO of the Alumni Association at Kansas State University.
