K-STATE DEPARTMENT OF ART OFFERING GALLERY TALK, ART LECTURE

MANHATTAN -- The art department at Kansas State University is sponsoring upcoming presentations by two artists.

Nelson Smith will have a "Gallery Talk" at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in Willard Hall's Chapman Gallery, while Michael Braley, design director at VSA Partners Inc. in New York, will present an art lecture at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in the K-State Student Union's Little Theater.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Smith's work is on display through Friday, Nov. 9, in the exhibition "Grammar of Tension" in the Chapman Gallery. Both the "Gallery Talk" and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

According to Smith, the exhibition title, "Grammar of Tension," is derived from his interest in the ways objects and schematic drawing can function as an alternative visual language. The reference to grammar, Smith said, attempts to make a literal connection to traditional language, while tension speaks to things about that language that are difficult to completely understand.

Smith has received awards for his work as a painter, composer and theater artist. His work reveals his ongoing exploration of relationships between objects and images as well as relationships between language and action. Smith is currently chair and associate professor of art at Marygrove College in Detroit, Mich., but he will be moving his studio from the Detroit area to Manhattan in early 2008.

Braley's work has been internationally recognized and is part of many permanent collections. He has worked for clients such as Effen Vodka, IBM and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. His work also has appeared in numerous publications and exhibitions.

Braley has taught typography at the California College of Arts and has lectured and led workshops at universities and professional organizations across the nation.

His lecture is funded by the K-State fine arts fee.
