THIRD
ANNUAL K-STATE INTERIOR DESIGN SYMPOSIUM TO FEATURE AWARD-WINNING
DESIGNER AND AN ETHICS EXPERT
MANHATTAN
-- A noted interior designer and an ethics expert will be the speakers
for Kansas State University's third annual Interior Design Symposium.
The
symposium, "Design Ethics: Education to Practice," will
be Friday, Oct. 20, at the K-State Student Union. Hosts for the
event are the K-State Interior Design Advisory Board and the department
of apparel, textiles and interior design in the College of Human
Ecology.
The
symposium will start with a panel discussion from 10-11 a.m. in
the Union's Big 12 Room. Presentations by the symposium's main speakers
will be from 1-3:30 p.m. in Forum Hall.
The
speakers are Shashi Caan, Contract magazine's 2004 designer of the
year, and Manhattan's John E. Carlin, an ethics expert.
Caan,
who is the symposium's keynote speaker, is chair of the interior
design program at the Parsons School of Design. In her job, Caan
works to bridge the gap between education and practice with a curriculum
that reinforces creativity and a deeper comprehension of designing
for today's complex lifestyles. She recently founded the Shashi
Caan Collective, a design practice for creative responses to today's
cultural needs.
Carlin will discuss "A Common Ground For Ethics." A former
assistant to the director of continuing education at K-State, Carlin
is active in community service and serves on the boards of the Manhattan
Emergency Shelter and the Manhattan Arts Center, as well as Catholic
Charities.
The
symposium's panel discussion and speaker presentations are free
and open to the public. For more information on the symposium, contact
Jennifer Rettele-Thomas at 1-800-432-1578 or e-mail jenniferr@found.ksu.edu
