PROFESSOR NEW NATIONAL CHAIR OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
HEADS
MANHATTAN
-- Mohammad Hosni, Kansas State University professor and head of
the department of mechanical and nuclear engineering, has been elected
chair of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Executive
Committee of Mechanical Engineering Department Heads.
He
will assume his first duties at the 2006 American Society of Mechanical
Engineers Congress, Nov. 5-10, in Chicago, Ill. The two-year appointment
also includes a position on the board of directors, Center for Education,
for the professional society.
The
committee, made up of nearly 245 mechanical engineering department
heads nationwide, operates under the charge of encouraging communication,
collaboration, and innovation in education among faculty leaders
and allied programs worldwide.
"I
am excited to serve the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
in this capacity," Hosni said. "To have the opportunity
to play a leadership role in issues facing department heads and
affecting engineering education as a whole is truly an honor. It
is a challenge that I accept with both humility and positive anticipation."
Prior
to his appointment as department head, Hosni served as director
of the K-State College of Engineering's Institute for Environmental
Research from 1993 to May 2001. His area of expertise is thermal
and fluid sciences, and he remains actively involved in research
projects conducted at the institute.
Hosni
has published more than 80 technical reports and articles in peer-reviewed
journals and conference proceedings, and has given a number of invited
talks and keynote speeches at national and international conferences.
His numerous professional recognitions include the Myers-Alford
Teaching Excellence Award in 1997 and Research Excellence Award
in 2001, both from the College of Engineering. He also received
K-State's Presidential Award for Outstanding Department Head in
2005.
A
recipient of the Distinguished Service Award in 2003 from the American
Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers,
he also is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
and of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning
Engineers.
Founded
in 1880, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers is a nonprofit
educational and technical organization with a worldwide membership
of 125,000.
