K-STATE
PROFESSOR TO RECEIVE INTERNATIONAL SENSORY SCIENCE AWARD
MANHATTAN
-- A human nutrition professor at Kansas State University is being
recognized for his exemplary dedication to the field of applied
sensory science.
Edgar
Chambers IV, director of the Sensory Analysis Center at K-State,
will be awarded the international David R. Peryam Committee E-18
Award, an honor granted to individuals who best exemplify the life
and career of applied sensory science pioneer, David R. Peryam.
This
marks the second time this award has been granted to a K-State faculty
member. In 1995, a K-State professor emeritus, Jean F. Caul, became
the first recipient of the Peryam Award -- a link that makes this
achievement even more meaningful to Chambers.
"This
award is very special to me," he said. "It represents
the highest award in my field -- a huge honor in itself. In addition,
Jean Caul was my professor at K-State, so the award has personal
meaning as well."
The
Peryam Award is given by ASTM International and will be presented
at the organization's annual meeting Oct. 25 in Atlanta. Nominated
applicants are reviewed by the award review committee from ASTM
and the Institute of Food Technologists, and evaluated on criteria
such as contributions to advancement in the field of applied sensory
science, shared knowledge of the field and time given to students
of sensory research. ASTM International is the world's largest voluntary
standards organization. The organization's primary purpose is to
develop standards for products, materials and testing that ensure
quality and safety.
The
award represents Chambers' lifetime of dedication in the field of
applied sensory science, which continues today.
"We
help companies make products better and organizations provide better
information," Chambers said. "It's all about helping people
understand how other people perceive their products or information."
