CHAIR
OF DEPARTMENT OF COUNSELING AND EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY AT K-STATE
NAMED FELLOW IN AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
MANHATTAN
-- Steve Benton, professor and chair of the department of counseling
and educational psychology at Kansas State University, has been
elected a Fellow in the Division of Educational Psychology of the
American Psychological Association.
The
association, based in Washington, D.C., is a scientific and professional
organization representing psychology in the United States. With
150,000 members, it is the largest association of psychologists
in the world.
According
to the association, election to Fellow status requires evidence
of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field
of psychology and that a person's work has had a national impact
on the field of psychology beyond a local, state or regional level.
Benton
has published on the cognitive processes involved in reading, writing
and studying, and on college-student drinking and mental health
issues. He served as editor of Educational Psychology Review, a
journal that publishes comprehensive review articles, from 1991
to 2000. He currently serves on the editorial boards of both Educational
Psychology Review and Contemporary Educational Psychology.
Benton
joined K-State in 1983. He served as assistant professor from 1983-88
and as associate professor from 1988 until 1994, when he was promoted
to full professor.
Benton
earned his doctorate in educational psychology in 1983, his master's
in educational psychology and measurements in 1980, and his bachelor's
in secondary education in 1977, all from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
