K-STATE TRUMPET ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM IN LONDON OVER THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY

MANHATTAN -- The Kansas State University trumpet ensemble will be traveling to London later this month to perform at St. Anne's Lutheran Church as part of the church's lunchtime concert series.

Gary Mortenson, professor and head of the K-State department of music and coordinator of trumpet ensemble, said that the group had to apply and be accepted to perform in the concert series.

"This series only has about 20 concerts a year, so we are very pleased to have this opportunity," Mortenson said.

The ensemble will be performing several works for the concert, including pieces by composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Erik Morales. "Infinite Ascent" by Morales is the premier performance. Morales studied under Mortenson at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

While in London, the ensemble also will perform at the Camden School for Girls and at the Royal Academy of Music, which will feature a joint performance with the trumpet studio of James Watson.

The group plans to visit several tourist attractions, too, including the British Museum, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral and Buckingham Palace.

In recent years, members of the K-State trumpet ensemble have performed on tours to France, Germany, Greece and Thailand. This is the ensemble's first trip to the United Kingdom.

"This is the opportunity of a lifetime," Mortenson said. "These students will never forget this experience."

Members of K-State's trumpet ensemble include:

Brian Williams, sophomore in music, Augusta; Samuel Mustain, freshman in music education, Basehor.

From Manhattan: Paul Mueller, graduate student in music; Eric Starnes, sophomore in music education; and Brian Stuckenschmidt, senior in music education.

Lindsay Bennett, sophomore in music education, Mulvane; Alan Martens, freshman in music education, Overland Park; and Alex Cook, sophomore in music education, and Rebecca Ronen, junior in applied music, both of Wichita.
