INFECTIOUS DISEASE EXPERTS CONVENE AT K-STATE FOR TOP LEVEL SYMPOSIUM ON EMERGING INFECTIONS

MANHATTAN -- Many of the world's top experts in infectious diseases are on the Kansas State University campus this week for a symposium "Emerging Infections: A Tribute to the One Medicine, One Health Concept."

The Nov. 13-14 symposium is organized and coordinated by Regents Distinguished Professor Juergen Richt, a Kansas Bioscience Authority Eminent Scholar and professor in K-State’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

The symposium serves a dual purpose: to present current scientific topics and to commemorate the opening of Richt's new laboratory facilities at K-State.

The event will kick off at the International Grains Program Executive Conference Center the evening of Nov. 13 featuring keynote speakers like Robert Webster, St. Jude Children's Hospital, Memphis, Tenn., "H5N1 Avian Influenza: Has the threat been overblown?"; Hilary Koprowski, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pa., "How Plant Vaccines Came To Be"; Heinz Feldmann, National Institutes of Health, Hamilton, Mont., "In Vivo Disease Modeling of High Containment Pathogens"; and Albert Osterhaus, Erasmus University, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, “Research on Respiratory Viruses."

"We will also provide tours of the new 115,000 sq. ft. state-of- the-art BSL-3/BSL-3 Ag facility, the Biosecurity Research Institute, which recently opened on the K-State campus," Richt said.
