K-STATE STUDENT NAMED NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF STUDENT CHAPTERS OF THE ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING INSTITUTE

MANHATTAN -- A Kansas State University senior in architectural engineering has been elected the national president of student chapters of the Architectural Engineering Institute.

Jared Palan, Lathrop, Mo., was the sole nominee for the post and was elected at the institute's recent annual meeting in Denver, Colo.

Palan's duties include organizing teleconferences with all the different chapters across the nation, updating the Web site and handbook, organizing the next national student meeting and planning other future events for the institute.

Palan has already faced many challenges in his capacity as student president. Trying to find a 30-minute block of time that works for all chapters for the regular teleconferences can be very difficult. Also, the Web site and handbook have not been updated since 2004.

In addition to fulfilling the duties of his office, Palan also must balance his engineering course load at K-State.

"It is always difficult to balance anything with engineering," he said. "But you have to just push yourself and try to manage your time the best you can."

Palan first became involved with the Architectural Engineering Institute as a freshman at K-State. In spring 2008, he became an officer in the K-State chapter. While he does not yet know the greatest benefit of his experience as the national president, Palan said that the opportunity to speak to many people in architectural engineering from all over the country is definitely one thing he will take from this experience.
