K-STATE MASTER'S STUDENT IN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION TO SERVE STATE AS KANSAS GOVERNOR'S FELLOW
MANHATTAN -- A Kansas State University graduate student will serve the Kansas state government for one year through her selection as the Kansas Governor's Fellow.
Kristen Rottinghaus, Manhattan, who will earn a master's in public administration from K-State in December, is the sole recipient of the fellowship this year. She will join the Kansas Department of Labor in January 2009, working on special projects. At the end of her year as the Governor's Fellow, she will have the option of joining the state government as a full-time employee.
"I would like to work in state government, but because there are such a wide variety of positions at the state level, I am not 100 percent set on one particular position," Rottinghaus said. "This is why I am so excited about and grateful for the fellowship. It will give me the opportunity to experience work in a couple of different agencies before deciding on one particular career path.
"To be chosen as a Kansas Governor's Fellow is a wonderful accomplishment and I look forward to the learning experience that such a rare opportunity presents," she said.
The Governor's Fellows Program began in 2004 and identifies, recruits and trains a small number of students with significant leadership potential for future leadership roles in Kansas state government. The program is funded by a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation.
Rottinghaus earned a bachelor's in economics from K-State in 2006, graduating summa cum laude. She is a member and former president of the K-State student chapter of the American Society for Public Administration, and is president of K-State's chapter of Pi Alpha Alpha, the honor society for public administrators. She also has served as a member of the board of directors of the Kansas chapter of the American Society for Public Administration.
A 2002 graduate of Hutchinson Senior High School, Rottinghaus is the daughter of Joe and Nancy Rottinghaus, Hutchinson.
