K-STATE STUDENT FROM NESS CITY A 2008 ROTARY AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLAR
MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University's Molly Kuhlman, senior in bakery science and management, Ness City, is a 2008 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.
Kuhlman is receiving a $24,000 scholarship from Rotary International that she will use to study at University College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland. She was nominated for the scholarship by the Northeast Kansas Rotary District, which includes the Manhattan Rotary Club and the Manhattan Konza Rotary Club.
"The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships program is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. The purpose of the program is to promote international understanding and friendship among people of different countries," said Cindy Zapletal, president of the Manhattan Rotary Club. "We are very proud that Molly will be representing our district. She exemplifies the high standards Rotary supports for its student ambassadors."
"Those in our club who are fortunate enough to take part in the Ambassadorial Scholarship candidate interviews are continually impressed with the quality of the individuals who apply," said Patrick Schaub, president of the Manhattan Konza Rotary Club. "For Molly Kuhlman to be selected from among this group is a great achievement, and we're excited about her ability to represent Rotary and our district."
Kuhlman plans to graduate in December and then work as a business manager from January to July 2009 for Scoular Grain Company. She'll head to Dublin in August 2009 to study rural agricultural development and broaden the scope of her grain science knowledge. She plans to study at the University College Dublin for two semesters, then return to the U.S. to finish her master's degree and/or work for a nonprofit organization in a public service role.
Kuhlman has been active in a number of campus organizations. She is a member of Alpha Mu Grain Science honorary, where she has served as president and as the College of Agriculture Council representative; the Kansas State University Student Foundation, where she has served as secretary/treasurer and diversity coordinator; and Silver Key, the sophomore honorary.
She has served internships with Sara Lee Corporation, American Bakers Association and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Grain Marketing and Research Production Center. She also served as an undergraduate representative on the department of grain science and industry's department head search committee in 2007.
Kuhlman has participated in the Peer Mentor and Adopt-A-School programs. She was a 2007 K-State nominee for the Truman Scholarship, and she has received the C.S. Broeman Scholarship, the W.E. Long Scholarship, and was a Wendy's High School Heisman Finalist and a Kansas Governor's Scholar.
Kuhlman is the daughter of Gerry and Ann Kuhlman and a 2004 graduate of Ness City High School, where she was class valedictorian.
The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocations studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Founded in 1947, the program has supported study abroad by nearly 38,000 individuals from around 100 nations.
