POLLUTION PREVENTION INSTITUTE AT K-STATE CO-SPONSORING KANSAS CITY ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE WORKSHOP FOR HOSPITALS
MANHATTAN -- Environmental compliance and pollution prevention are the featured topics of a workshop and trade show coming to Kansas City, Kan. The Hospitals for a Healthy Environment event will feature three national speakers.
Co-sponsored by Kansas State University's Pollution Prevention Institute, in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Hospitals for a Healthy Environment will be 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6; with a pre-workshop event offered from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, all at the University of Kansas Hospital's Student Center in Kansas City, Kan.
Nancy Larson, director of K-State's Pollution Prevention Institute, said the workshop and trade show are especially for health care environmental managers, facilities and safety staff, as well as pharmacists, laboratory managers and anyone interested in compliance and waste minimization.
National speakers for the workshop include John Brenna, who will speak about pharmacy waste management systems. Brenna has 30 years of experience in complex pharmacy operations, including serving in multiple capacities at hospitals and a major medical center in Minnesota. Janet Brown, a partner coordinator for H2E, will speak about H2E resources and the Green Guide for Health Care. Also presenting will be Clark Reed, director of the Health Care Division for Energy Star at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Reed will teach how hospitals can improve energy efficiency, enhance profits and reduce greenhouse emissions.
The workshop will include sessions on compliance pitfalls for hospitals and how to overcome these pitfalls, improving performance with Energy Star best practices and how to implement a pharmaceutical waste management program. Breakout sessions will be offered on universal wastes, reducing health care toxics, red bag reduction and solid waste minimization.
