'GREEKS GO GREEN' CAMPAIGN AT K-STATE RECEIVES GRANT
MANHATTAN -- The Kansas State University Greek community has been selected as one of 10 communities nationwide to receive a $500 grant to promote environmental awareness on campus through a "Greeks Go Green" campaign.
The grant is sponsored by The People Speak and Americans for Informed Democracy. K-State's proposal was selected for funding out of a competitive applicant pool.
The "Greeks Go Green" campaign is sponsored locally by K-State's Panhellenic and Interfraternity councils.
Representatives from the 10 Greek communities selected for grant funding will attend a weekend retreat, starting Friday, Dec. 7, in Washington, D.C. Representing K-State will be Molly Hamm, junior in English and secondary education, Shawnee. Hamm is director of community and internal relations for K-State's Panhellenic Council.
The competition charged each Greek community to make their campaigns renewable resources by creating video documentation which will serve as training materials for other universities to implement similar campaigns.
Hamm said K-State's Greek community has made significant progress on their campaign and that filming and documentation will begin in the spring semester.
K-State Greek chapters have formed a partnership with the Manhattan Sunset Zoo's Go Green program to outline which steps to going green chapters will pursue. As a part of the recent Bring in the Greeks Community Service Week at K-State, each chapter house has received recycling bins.
K-State's Greek community also is partnering with Students for Environmental Action, the K-State Student Governing Association and the Association of Residence Halls to find ways to improve K-State's current campus recycling program.
