K-STATE TEAMS COMPETE IN REGIONAL CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT COMPETITION
MANHATTAN -- Three teams from the construction science and management program in the department of architectural engineering and construction science at Kansas State University participated in the Associated Schools of Construction Region IV annual Construction Management Competition, Oct. 25-27, in Nebraska City, Neb.
With financial support from the Associated General Contractors of Kansas and PCI, K-State competed in three of the competition's four divisions: commercial building, design/build and heavy/highway.
For the competition, each team was presented with an actual construction problem pertinent to its division to be completed in 16 hours. The teams were required to devise a method of construction, estimate the cost of the project, schedule the project and develop a safety plan, quality control plan and protocol management plan. On the following day, the teams then prepared an oral and visual presentation. On the last day of competition, the teams presented their solutions to a panel of judges comprised of individuals who actually designed and constructed the original projects.
K-State's heavy/highway team placed first out of eight teams. The project required the relocation of major utilities for excavation and placement of retaining walls, a tunnel system under a major Interstate, a rail station and a one-mile length of concrete base for a light-rail mass transit system in St. Louis, Mo. The team was coached by James Goddard, professor of architectural engineering and construction science.
The design/build team placed third out of eight teams. The project was to provide architectural/engineering services and construction services for a new residential urban infill project at the historic Country Club Gardens development in downtown Denver, Colo. The team was coached by Susie Calvin, instructor of architectural engineering and construction science.
The commercial building division team placed eighth out of 11 teams. The division was sponsored by J.E. Dunn Construction Company, Kansas City. The project was an in-patient care facility in an urban-residential Midwestern community. The team was coached by Tom Logan, assistant professor of architectural engineering and construction science.
With its first-place finish, K-State's heavy/highway division team will represent the Associated Schools of Construction Region IV at the National Construction Management competition in Las Vegas in March 2008. The event is in conjunction with the Associated General Contractors of America national convention. Kiewit Construction, a co-sponsor of the Region IV heavy/highway division, presented the K-State team with a $1,000 award to assist the team with expenses to the national competition.
