TIME
CHANGE FOR K-STATE'S MYERS HALL CEREMONY
MANHATTAN
-- The time of the ceremony for the renaming of Kansas State University's
Military Sciences Building to Gen. Richard B. Myers Hall has been
changed to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9.
The
time change was made to accommodate the schedule of U.S. Secretary
of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who will be attending the ceremony.
Rumsfeld will deliver a Landon Lecture at K-State at 11 a.m. Nov.
9.
K-State
is renaming the Military Science Building in honor of Myers, a K-State
alum who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2001-2005.
In the position, he was the principal military adviser to Rumsfeld,
President George W. Bush and the National Security Council.
Myers
graduated from K-State in 1965, where he earned a bachelor's degree
in mechanical engineering and was a member of the university's Air
Force ROTC program. During his military career, Myers commanded
various Air Force operations in the United States and abroad, among
other leadership positions. Prior to becoming the 15th chairman
of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Myers served as vice chairman and
as assistant to the chairman. He retired from the Air Force in September
2005.
The
renaming of the building was approved by the Kansas Board of Regents.
The hall, home to K-State's Army and Air Force ROTC programs, is
the only building on campus to be built during World War II. Construction
started in 1941 and was completed in 1943.
Myers
holds a part-time appointment at K-State as a Foundation professor
of military history and leadership. His duties include giving guest
lectures to classes and attending special events for the K-State
Alumni Association and Kansas State University Foundation.
