FIRMS COMING TO K-STATE TO HELP COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN PREPARE FOR CAREERS THROUGH MOCK INTERVIEWS

MANHATTAN -- Nearly 120 students in Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and Design will get the chance to hone their interviewing skills with the help of prospective employers.

Representatives of 16 professional architectural and design firms from across the country will take part in the 15th annual College of Architecture, Planning and Design Mock Interviews Friday, Nov. 10, on the K-State campus. The interviews allow fourth-year, fifth-year and graduate students in the college the chance to practice their interviewing skills in a professional setting and to interact with professionals in their field, said Tom Hollinberger, assistant director of K-State's career and employment services, which sponsors the event with the college.

"It's our understanding that K-State's College of Architecture, Planning and Design is one of the few architecture colleges that conducts this type of event," Hollinberger said. "The architecture mock interviews really have been the catalyst for many students to get jobs. The firms come here because they like to preview our students. I think another reason for the high participation this year is the rebounding job market."

Participating firms include: Walt Disney Imagineering, Glendale, Calif.; Wimberly Allison Tong and Goo, Irvine, Calif.; Williams and Paddon Architects, Roseville, Calif.; Interior Architects and Norris Design, both of Denver, Colo.; Canin Associates, Orlando, Fla.; Gensler, Chicago, Ill.; Steelcase, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Cannon Design and Lawrence Group, both of St. Louis, Mo.; Brennan Beer Gorman, New York, N.Y.; Beck Group, Mesa and Wilson Associates, all of Dallas, Texas; Callison Architecture, Seattle, Wash.; and Applied Ecological Services, Brodhead, Wis.

Students organizing the event include:

Monica Miller, fifth-year in landscape architecture, Burdett; Gemma Gough, senior in landscape architecture, Derby.

From Greater Kansas City: Andrew Hess, senior in architecture, Lenexa; and Jayme Jones, senior in landscape architecture, and Colleen Wittman, graduate student in interior architecture and product design, both of Olathe.

From Missouri: Ashleigh Rogers, fifth-year in interior architecture, Greenfield; Kelly Moore, fifth-year senior in architecture, Independence; Laura Indihar, fifth-year senior in architecture, Kirkwood; Michelle Keeven, fifth-year in interior architecture, O'Fallon; Mark Ruzicka, fifth-year in landscape architecture, Springfield; Ethan Primm, fifth-year senior in landscape architecture, St. Charles; and Katie Harms, fifth-year senior in architecture, Weatherby.

From Oklahoma: Brit Karber, graduate student in interior architecture and product design, Fairview.

Along with Hollinberger, faculty and staff organizing the event include: Tony Barnes, professor of landscape architecture and regional and community planning; Mary Ewing, senior administrative assistant with career and employment services; Allan Hastings, professor of interior architecture and product design; Wendy Ornelas, associate dean of the College of Architecture, Planning and Design; and Diane Potts, assistant to the dean of the College of Architecture, Planning and Design.
