MANHATTAN -- The department of economics at Kansas State University will present the first Joe Tiao Lecture on Economic Policy at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, in the Cottonwood Room of the K-State Student Union.

Each year, the Tiao Lecture Series will feature two economists of national and international stature who will speak on contemporary economic issues. For the inaugural event, Robert Crandall will be the featured lecturer. Crandall will present "The Rise and Fall of Government Regulation."

Crandall is a senior scholar at the Brookings Institution, a private organization devoted to analyzing public policy issues at the national level, and he has done work regarding government regulations. He has written books on subjects such as environment economics, the telecommunications industry and regulation of access to the Internet. He also has published articles on regulatory and antitrust issues, and has served as a consultant to the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Crandall has consulted for more than 20 companies in the telecommunications, cable TV, broadcasting and newspaper publishing industries.

Crandall received his bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1962, and his doctoral degree from Northwestern University in 1968. He has served as an assistant and associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and as director of the Council on Wage and Price Stability.
