KIDNEY
EXPERT PRESENTING K-STATE CLARENBURG LECTURE NOV. 29
MANHATTAN
-- Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine
is bringing an expert in kidney function to campus for the Rudolf
Clarenburg Lectureship.
Physician
and researcher Mark A. Knepper will present "Aquaporins in
Health and Disease" at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, in the Practice
Management Center at Trotter Hall. Refreshments will be served at
3:30 p.m. The lecture is open to the public.
Knepper
is a principal investigator at the Lab of Kidney and Electrolyte
Metabolism at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in Bethesda,
Md. His laboratory uses a systems biology approach understand how
the kidneys regulate the transport of water, urea and ions. His
lab also seeks to discover how these regulatory processes are altered
in fluid and electrolyte disorders.
Knepper's
research emphasizes the regulatory systems involved in controlling
water excretion by the kidney, including aquaporin-2 regulation
and the role of urea transporters in the urinary concentrating mechanism.
His lab also is studying the molecular basis of disordered renal
sodium chloride transport in hypertension and congestive heart failure.
Knepper
received his doctorate in biomedical engineering from Case Western
University in 1975 and his medical degree in 1976. His other research
interests include epithelial function and biomedical engineering.
He has published more than 325 journal articles and book chapters
on these subjects.
The
Rudolf Clarenburg Lectureship was established in 1996 to honor Clarenburg,
who was a professor of anatomy and physiology at K-State. The lecture
series brings nationally and internationally acclaimed scientists
to the university to discuss their research interests with students
and faculty.
