K-STATE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND PRODUCT DESIGN STUDENTS EARN HONORS FROM THE KANSAS CITY ARCHITECTS, DESIGNERS, DEALERS AND REPRESENTATIVES
MANHATTAN -- Several interior architecture and product design students at Kansas State University earned honors in the annual Kansas City Architects, Designers, Dealers and Representatives Regional Student Competition.
The furniture was made during the 2007-2008 academic year in furniture design and construction studio classes taught by interior and product design faculty members David Brown, Steve Davidson and Rod Troyer.
Students receiving honors include:
Maggie Cocke, May 2008 master of interior architecture and product design graduate, Augusta, first place in large furniture; Ashley Cook, master's student in interior architecture and product design, Edson, second place in large furniture; Carla Pumphrey, May 2008 master of interior architecture and product design graduate, Overland Park, third place in large furniture; Jordan Dozier, May 2008 master of interior architecture and product design graduate, Spring Hill, fourth place in large furniture; and Janelle Heideman, third-year student in interior architecture and product design, Topeka, second place in small furniture.
From out of state: Staci Reed, third-year student in interior architecture and product design, Buckner, Mo., third place in small furniture; and Caleb Roam, third-year student in interior architecture and product design, Grain Valley, Mo., first place in small furniture.
In his prize presentation remarks, juror representative Mike Kirkpatrick said the jurors used three criteria -- design, marketability and craftsmanship -- to make their award decisions. "Many of the jurors have juried this competition for a number of years," he said. "We never cease to be amazed at the ever increasing level of creativity and workmanship in the students' furniture designs and construction. Coming to K-State each year for this competition is something we truly look forward to."
The Kansas City Architects, Designers, Dealers and Representatives is a furniture and furnishings interest group in the metropolitan Kansas City area. This year's competition jurors included Kathy Anderson, Designtex; Sara DiMaggio, Interior Landscape Inc.; Bill Gapske Sr. and Bill Gapske Jr., sales representatives; Mike Kirkpatrick, Encompas; Ed Kinney and Jim Pettijohn, Pettijohn Kinney Architects and Interiors; Rebecca O'Connor, sales representative; Jennifer Peterson, designer; and Ray Secrest, Secrest Architectural Interiors.
