K-STATE LIBRARIES AWARDS MORSE SCHOLARSHIP TO STUDENT FROM SHAWNEE

MANHATTAN -- Molly Hamm, a Kansas State University senior in English and secondary education, Shawnee, has been awarded the Marjorie J. and Richard L. D. Morse Family and Community Public Policy Scholarship for summer 2008.

Hamm, who also carries a minor in nonprofit leadership studies, was awarded the scholarship for her proposal "Educating Young Consumers Through Debate on Global Issues." The project seeks to understand how student participation in debates on global issues impacts understanding of the effects of consumerism and consumption. She will conduct her research during an internship with The People Speak, a program of the United Nations Foundation in Washington, D.C., this summer.

Awarded by K-State Libraries since 2001, the Morse scholarship provides funds for a K-State undergraduate student to work on a project that impacts public policy and involves community service. The scholarship is made possible through an endowment established by Marjorie J. and Richard L. D. Morse. More information about the scholarship is available at http://www.lib.k-state.edu/depts/spec/morse-scholarship.html

The role of K-State Libraries, in addition to making the award, is to guide the student through the process of fulfilling the obligations of the scholarship and, as necessary, provide research assistance with the Consumer Movement Archives.

"I have recently been interested in how the environmental movement has been impacted by consumerism, and using that interest in the consumer movement was a natural fit for me when thinking about my project proposal for this scholarship," Hamm said. "I am so grateful for the opportunity to conduct research this summer thanks to the generous support of this award."

"We believe Molly Hamm is a perfect fit for this scholarship because her proposal intersects public policy with consumer education and awareness," said Lori A. Goetsch, dean of K-State Libraries. "Reviewers were unanimous in their selection of Molly, noting that her work carries on the Morse legacy."

Hamm's also has served as American Humanics student coordinator, chair of the Student Governing Association's University Relations Committee and she completed a year of service in AmeriCorps.
