K-STATE STUDENTS EARN PHI KAPPA PHI GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP, STUDY ABROAD GRANTS

MANHATTAN -- Three Kansas State University students have received awards from Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society.

Emily Voigt, senior in chemical engineering, McPherson, was one of only 60 students nationwide to receive a $5,000 graduate fellowship from the society. K-State leads the nation in Phi Kappa Phi fellowship winners since 1986 with 21. Each Phi Kappa Phi chapter is allowed to select only one outstanding student to compete in the annual national fellowship competition.

Megan Dirks, junior in marketing, Hutchinson, and Jayne Long, junior in life sciences, Topeka, each received $1,000 study abroad grants. Only 50 of the grants were awarded nationally.

Voigt will use her fellowship grant for doctoral study in chemical engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall. Voigt, who has a minor in German, is a 2007 Goldwater Scholar and recently earned a National Science Foundation fellowship worth about $120,000 over three years. She was a Clare Boothe Luce Scholar in 2005 and has also been a Putnam Scholar. Voigt has done research in biofuels production while at K-State, in addition to several other research projects. She has been the editor and cataloguer for Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honor society, and secretary and public relations coordinator for Mentors for International Experiences. She is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Engineering Ambassadors, Society of Women Engineers, The Navigators and Women Mentoring Women. The daughter of Richard and Mary Voigt, McPherson, she is a 2004 graduate of Smoky Valley High School, Lindsborg.

Dirks will study in France during the 2009 spring semester. She has been an officer of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta, and a member of Silver Key, the sophomore honorary, and Chimes, the junior honorary. Dirks also has served as an Adopt-A-School tutor and a Wildcat Warm-up counselor. She is the daughter of Michael and Cristi Dirks, Hutchinson, and a 2006 graduate of Hutchinson Senior High School.

Long will perform 10 weeks of service work in Gaborone, Botswana, this summer as part of the International Service Teams program through K-State civic leadership.

Long, who also is working on a minor in nonprofit leadership, is active with K-State civic leadership, and is a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Ambassadors, Pre-Physician Assistant Club, Student Health Advisory Council, American Humanics Student Association and Mortar Board, a senior honor society. She is the daughter of Brenden and Alaire Long and a 2005 graduate of Topeka High School.
