SPEAKER AT K-STATE'S BEACH MUSEUM OF ART TO GIVE POINTERS ON WORKING WITH KIDS AND ART

MANHATTAN -- The Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University is inviting parents and teachers to K-State to hear a veteran art educator's advice on exploring art museums with children.

Susan Baley, curator of education at the University of Oklahoma's Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, will present "Young Children and the Art Museum" at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7.

"'Young Children and the Art Museum' is designed to help adults work with children," said Kathrine Schlageck, senior educator at the Beach Museum. "We do two or three of these programs per year on different topics."

The program is part of an adult series called "Looking at Art," which is funded by the Kansas Arts Commission.

"The workshop will emphasize art museums as exceptional, informal learning environments that encourage creativity," Baley said. "We will explore the theory of multiple intelligences, or learning styles, and find out ways that the art museum can be accessible to all of them. I will also emphasize how art museums provide a wonderful way to interact with children in a meaningful way, which seems especially important in our hi-tech society."

"We want to be sure that the visual arts are a vital part of our children's education," Schlageck said. "This program is geared for any adults who are interested in becoming better art educators. It's ideal for parents, home school providers, teachers and 'picture-person' volunteers."

The museum will provide a workshop for kids and child care while the adults learn techniques and ideas. The workshops are free, but reservations are requested. For more information contact Schlageck at klwalk@k-state.edu or 785-532-7718.

The Beach Museum is on the southeast corner of the K-State campus at 14th Street and Anderson Avenue. Admission is free, and free visitor parking is available next to the building. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays; and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. The museum is closed Mondays.
