K-STATE AT SALINA PROFESSOR RECEIVES FELLOWSHIP TO ATTEND HOLOCAUST EDUCATION SEMINAR
SALINA -- Patricia Ackerman, assistant professor of arts, sciences and business at Kansas State University at Salina, has received a fellowship to attend the 2008 Memorial Library Summer Seminar on Holocaust Education.
The seminar, July 7-19 in New York City, explores how educators can engage students with difficult material such as hatred, prejudice and state-sanctioned genocide, and how writing, dialogue and inquiry can help students develop empathy and move them toward action.
Ackerman was among the 20 fellowship recipients. The fellowships were made possible through the Holocaust Educators Network in partnership with the National Writing Project. Selections were made from a pool of applicants who have served as National Writing Project teacher-consultants in the Rural Sites Network.
The seminar is sponsored by the Memorial Library, Lehman College and the Graduate Center of City University of New York.
Ackerman joined the K-State at Salina faculty in 2000 and teaches expository writing and critical thinking. She has been honored for her teaching with K-State at Salina's Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence in 2005.
Ackerman earned a bachelor's from Marymount College, a master's from Fort Hays State University and a doctorate from K-State.
