K-STATE ARCHITECTURE STUDENT'S SUSTAINABLE DESIGN WINS 2007 HEINTZELMAN PRIZE
MANHATTAN -- A proposal for an ecologically sustainable retreat center at Chase County's Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve has won its student designer the Heintzelman Prize, awarded annually by Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and Design.
The design by Eric Abeln, Edwardsville, Ill., takes advantage of solar-powered and sustainable building and landscaping techniques. He developed the concept during his fifth-year design studio led by K-State's Gary Coates, professor of architecture, with the assistance of Finnish architect Mikko Heikkiknen, who was the 2007 Victor L. Regnier visiting professor in K-State's department of architecture.
The Heintzelman Prize recognizes an outstanding design achievement by a student in the final semester of the professional bachelor of architecture degree program. The prize is named for J. Cranston Heintzelman, a longtime teacher in the department.
One student or team of students in each fifth-year design studio is nominated by the faculty. A jury composed of a guest educator, a guest practitioner and a member of the K-State community selects the winner. This year's jurors were Martin Despang, professor in the College of Architecture, University of Nebraska, Lincoln; John Freshnock, principal of WSKF Architects, Kansas City, Mo.; and Martha Seaton, Manhattan.
The results were announced at the college's May 12 commencement ceremony. The projects are on display through the summer in the Chang Gallery at Seaton Hall.
