K-State-Kabul University partnership delivers:
K-STATE DEPARTMENTS, VARNEY'S, ARMY TO SEND BOOKS TO AFGHAN UNIVERSITY

MANHATTAN -- The U.S. Army and Varney's Book Store in Manhattan are helping Kansas State University deliver on a partnership with Kabul University, Afghanistan.

As part of a project coordinated by K-State Libraries, K-State faculty and colleagues at other schools, along with Varney's, have collected about 2,000 books directly related to programs at Kabul University that K-State has signed contracts to help enhance.

Representatives from K-State and Kabul University signed two three-year contracts April 25 to improve the College of Engineering and the department of English at the Afghan school. The donated books are in the areas of engineering, architecture, languages and linguistics. Daryl Youngman, associate professor and assistant to the dean for collaborative initiatives at K-State Libraries, said donating book editions from the last five years was encouraged.

The books will be picked up by troops from Fort Riley at 10 a.m. Friday, May 18, at the Fiedler Hall loading dock on K-State's campus. The dock is on the west side of Fiedler Hall, just off of Denison Avenue. The Army will ship the books to Afghanistan.

Funds for the improvement contracts are provided by the World Bank.
