K-STATE STUDENTS EARN THREE GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIPS: Three Kansas State University students are recipients of 2008 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships, while a fourth student has been recognized as an honorable mention for the award.

K-STATE WORKING ON WEB SITE ABOUT QUALITY OF HARD RED WINTER WHEAT AT HARVEST: By this fall, if all goes as planned, wheat producers and buyers will be able to access information about the quality of hard red winter wheat harvested in the Great Plains region through a collaborative project at Kansas State University.

FINAL LARSON LECTURE OF THE YEAR ABOUT K-STATE'S PARTNERSHIP WITH KABUL UNIVERSITY: The final Vernon Larson Lecture of the school year will be at a special time and be in conjunction with the annual meeting of Kansas State University's Friends of International Programs.

HEAD OF K-STATE'S DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN NUTRITION TO REVIEW NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH GRANTS: Denis M. Medeiros, professor and head of Kansas State University's department of human nutrition, has been appointed to a prestigious and powerful grant reviewing section of the National Institutes of Health.

PAPERS BY K-STATE INTERIOR DESIGN PROFESSORS AMONG BEST AT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE: Papers presented by two Kansas State University interior design faculty members were recognized as among the best at the 2008 international conference of the Interior Design Educators Council, March 5-8, in Montreal, Canada.

K-STATE PHYSICS RESEARCHERS MAKE PROGRESS IN DEVELOPING FASTER, MORE POWERFUL LASERS TO IDENTIFY, IMAGE MOLECULAR ELEMENTS AND IMPROVE MACHINING: In April 2007, a team of physics researchers at Kansas State University started experimenting with an idea to make faster, more powerful and efficient laser-like soft X-rays. But assignments in Michael Wesch's anthropology classes at Kansas State University have been seen around the world and by as many as 1.5 million other people.

K-STATE CONTRIBUTIONS TO RED FLOUR BEETLE GENOME SEQUENCING FEATURED IN MARCH 27 ARTICLE IN THE JOURNAL NATURE: Most of us hate to find the red flour beetle living happily in the flour sack in our pantries. But for several scientists at Kansas State University, and many others throughout the world, this pest of stored grain and grain products is the best organism for studying genetics.

K-STATE RESEARCHERS BOOST BEEF JERKY SAFETY: With funding provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, K-State researchers Elizabeth Boyle and Kelly Getty have validated a new way for small-scale jerky producers to keep both E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella out of the food chain.

TRACING FIDO'S ANCESTORS POSSIBLE WITH NEW DNA TEST: If your mixed breed dog herds the neighborhood kids, he might be part herding dog; if she digs she might be part terrier; behaviors often reflect the purpose for which a dog was originally bred. K-STATE PROFESSOR OF MODERN LANGUAGES BUILDS CULTURAL BRIDGES WITH WORK IN AFGHANISTAN: As part of an exchange program between Kansas State University and Kabul University in Afghanistan, K-State's Peter Arnds, professor of modern languages, spent the month of November in Afghanistan teaching a pedagogy course to faculty and students at Kabul University.

K-STATE RHODES SCHOLAR EARNS DOCTORATE IN GEOGRAPHY FROM OXFORD: Benjamin Champion, a 2003 Rhodes Scholar from Kansas State University, has been granted his doctorate in geography from Oxford University in England.

K-STATE ART STUDENT'S SMALL TEAPOT EARNS PLACE IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION: Jason Harper's little teapots are anything but short and stout. While they do have handles -- of a kind -- and they do have spouts, when you tip them over, you may want to shout because they might not pour as expected.

RURAL VETERINARY STUDENTS AT K-STATE LEARN AN IN-DEPTH LESSON ABOUT FOREIGN ANIMAL DISEASE RESPONSE: Kansas State University's National Agricultural Biosecurity Center and the College of Veterinary Medicine enlisted K-State's first class of rural veterinary scholars to study the state's plan and expand upon the role of the college should foot-and-mouth disease come to Kansas.

K-STATE STUDENT TEAM WINS INTERNATIONAL INTERIOR DESIGN COMPETITION: A team of Kansas State University interior design students has won an international student design competition sponsored by the Interior Design Educators Council.

UNIVERSITY CONTINUING EDUCATION ASSOCIATION TO HONOR TWO K-STATE FACULTY MEMBERS AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE: Two Kansas State University faculty members are receiving national awards from the University Continuing Education Association. Virginia Moxley, professor and dean and of K-State's College of Human Ecology, will receive the 2008 Faculty Service Award, while Ann Murray, associate professor of family studies and human services, will receive the 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award.

IRAQI POET TO GIVE READING AT K-STATE: A poet whose writings were considered rebellious and subversive enough for the Iraqi regime to threaten her in the 1990s will present a reading of her work at Kansas State University.

K-STATE STUDENT EARNS AWARDS AT RECENT PSYCHOLOGY MEETING: Kansas State University's Russell Webster, graduate student in psychology, won two awards for his poster presentation at the recent Society for Personality and Social Psychology annual meeting in Albuquerque, N.M.

K-STATE ENGINEERING PROFESSOR NAMED TO NATIONAL COMMITTEE: Brian A. Coon, associate professor of civil engineering at Kansas State University, has been appointed to the Committee on Tort Liability and Risk Management, AL070, by the Transportation Research Board Executive Committee.

MANHATTAN MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD AT K-STATE APRIL 19, FOR KIDS IN GRADES 5-12: The 12th annual Manhattan Mathematic Olympiad will be Saturday, April 19, at Kansas State University. The challenging mathematical competition, for kids in grades 5-12, is part of K-State's All-University Open House.

K-STATE BIOLOGIST, RESEARCH TEAM FIND THAT MICROORGANISMS FILTER NITROGEN FROM SMALL STREAMS, KEEPING LARGER WATERWAYS CLEANER: To understand how nitrogen accumulates in large rivers and oceans miles and miles away, scientists like Walter Dodds looked at small streams flowing closer to home.

K-STATE AT SALINA FORMS APPLIED RESEARCH CENTER FOR AVIATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRESS: Kansas State University at Salina has formed a new center for applied aviation research and testing. The K-State Applied Aviation Research Center will advance aerospace technology through application of research in propulsion, airframe, avionics and aviation training.

K-STATE'S DENIS MEDEIROS CO-AUTHOR OF NEW TEXTBOOK ON NUTRITION THAT COMES WITH SPECIAL EXTRAS: A new 744-page nutrition textbook, co-authored by Denis Medeiros who leads the department of human nutrition in Kansas State University's College of Human Ecology, has more bells and whistles than a calliope.

K-STATE STUDENTS LEND A HAND BEHIND THE SCENES AND IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA FOR ON-CAMPUS FILMING OF 'MODERN MARVELS' EPISODE ABOUT BREAD: Several Kansas State University students rolled up their sleeves to help a crew filming a documentary television show at K-State. The film crew was on campus in February taping segments for an episode of "Modern Marvels" about bread.

WORK BY K-STATE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN FACULTY ON DISPLAY IN SEATON HALL'S CHANG GALLERY: An exhibit of work by faculty in the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning, and Design is on display in the Chang Gallery of Seaton Hall through Friday, March 28.

K-STATE VETERINARY STUDENTS EARN PHI ZETA RESEARCH DAY AWARDS: Posters, case reports, presentations on basic science and clinical science research projects and other presentations have earned several Kansas State University students awards at the annual Phi Zeta Research Day.

K-STATE'S COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE NAMES NEW AG AMBASSADORS: Kansas State University has selected 22 students to represent K-State's College of Agriculture. But when he helps lead a team of volunteer builders to El Salvador during spring break, his most useful assets will be a strong arm and a supply of trowels.

K-STATE APPAREL DESIGN STUDENTS EARN COMPETITION HONORS: Apparel design students from Kansas State University have taken top honors or placed highly in two recent competitions.

K-STATE IN TOP 10 IN POVERTY-FIGHTING CAMPAIGN: Kansas State University students are in the top 10 in a national competition to encourage student involvement in fighting extreme poverty.

K-STATE STUDENT BODY VICE PRESIDENT IS FIRST EVER TO WIN PRESIDENCY: Lydia Peele, a senior in mathematics education, has made history at Kansas State University by becoming the first student body vice president to go on to win a term as president.

K-STATE DEAN OF ENGINEERING PARTICIPATES IN PUBLIC POLICY COLLOQUIUM IN WASHINGTON, D.C.: John English, dean of Kansas State University's College of Engineering, joined engineering deans from across the nation at the 2008 American Society for Engineering Education Public Policy Colloquium, Feb. 26-27, in Washington, D.C.

K-STATE'S ALBERT HAMSCHER NAMED KENNETH S. DAVIS CHAIR OF HISTORY: Kansas State University's Albert Hamscher, a highly regarded historian of early modern France and a scholar of U.S. cemeteries, has been named the university's Kenneth S. Davis Professor of History.

K-STATE'S CARLA JONES A 2008 DIAMOND HONOREE OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE PERSONNEL ASSOCIATION: Carla Jones, assistant vice president and senior associate dean of student life at Kansas State University, has been recognized by the American College Personnel Association's Educational Leadership Foundation as a 2008 Diamond Honoree.

STUDENTS FROM K-STATE TAKING PART IN CAPITOL GRADUATE RESEARCH SUMMIT MARCH 13 AT KANSAS STATEHOUSE: The annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit will be Thursday, March 13, at the Kansas Statehouse in Topeka. The summit features research being conducted by graduate students at Kansas State University, University of Kansas, KU Medical Center and Wichita State University.

K-STATE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA PRESENTING FAREWELL CONCERT BEFORE HEADING OUT ON EUROPEAN TOUR: Kansas State University's Chamber Orchestra will present a "farewell concert" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in McCain Auditorium. The concert will highlight the various music the orchestra plans to perform before audiences in England and Scotland.

LISA FREEMAN PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT OF INNOVATION FOR K-STATE OLATHE INNOVATION CAMPUS: Lisa Freeman, associate dean of research and graduate programs at Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, has been named associate vice president of innovation by the K-State Olathe Innovation Campus, Inc., board of directors.

ADMINISTRATORS AT K-STATE'S BRI GAIN NEW RESPONSIBILITIES: Two administrators at Kansas State University's BRI -- Biosecurity Research Institute -- recently gained some new responsibilities. The BRI's associate director, Scott Rusk, has advanced to become director of Pat Roberts Hall, while biosafety officer Julie Johnson has been promoted to assistant vice president for research compliance for K-State.

BENCHMARK FINANCIAL COMMITS $60,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS FOR K-STATE MARKETING STUDENTS: Benchmark Financial, a general agency of New England Financial and a MetLife company, has committed $60,000 in scholarships to Kansas State University marketing students over the next five years.
