MANHATTAN -- The spring edition of the Lecture Series on Civic Discourse at Kansas State University's Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy will feature David Mathews, president of the Kettering Foundation.

Mathews will present "Democracy Without Citizens?" at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at the K-State Alumni Center. The lecture is free and the public is welcome. A reception and book signing with Mathews will follow his lecture.

Mathews is a former secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in the Ford administration and a former president of the University of Alabama. He has written extensively on subjects such as Southern history, public policy and international problem solving. His most recent works include "Politics for People: Finding a Responsible Public Voice," "For Communities to Work" and "Why Public Schools? Whose Public Schools?"

The Kettering Foundation, a nonpartisan and nonpolitical organization, was founded in 1927 to sponsor and carry out scientific research for the benefit of humanity.
