Interior design team wins national competition

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

MANHATTAN -- For the third time in the last six years, a Kansas State University interior design student team has won the annual Interior Design Educators Council Student Design Competition.

This year's team claimed first prize for its entry "A Refreshing Education." The award was presented at the annual conference of the Interior Design Educators Council, which was Feb. 17-19 in Indianapolis. Kansas State University teams also won the competition in 2008 and 2010.

This year's competition featured 37 programs across the U.S. and Canada, with 101 team projects submitted to Interior Design Education Council regional competitions.

The competition focused on envisioning the future of higher education learning environments. Students were asked to explore new paradigms of learning spaces and consider how interior design would enhance the experiences associated with technology and connectivity through both on-line and on-site settings. Teams had less than two weeks to investigate the critical design issues, complete their projects and prepare final presentations.

Team members, all seniors and all interior design majors, include Andrea Sisk, Overland Park; Sydney Hall, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Haoran Hu, Wuhan City, China.

Team adviser is Migette Kaup, associate professor of interior design.

Kansas State University's interior design program is part of the department of apparel, textiles and interior design in the College of Human Ecology.
